Golden conure diet: a vet-guided plan

Wild golden conures eat a range of foods, but a pet bird needs a diet planned for its health, age, and activity. Discuss feeding with an avian veterinarian; this guide is background, not a diet plan for an individual bird.

Wild foods and companion diets are different

Species accounts describe wild golden conures eating fruit, nuts, flowers, and buds. A pet bird lives in a different environment and needs reliable nutrition. A list of foods eaten in the wild is not a complete diet for a companion bird.

Start with an avian veterinarian

Ask an avian veterinarian to assess your bird and recommend a feeding plan. Many plans use a complete formulated food as a base, with fresh vegetables, fruit, and other foods in amounts suited to the bird. The right balance varies, and an all-seed diet may not provide complete nutrition.

Make changes carefully

Some birds do not recognize unfamiliar foods as food. If your veterinarian recommends a transition, make it gradually and monitor that the bird is actually eating and maintaining its usual health. Do not withhold familiar food to force acceptance. Ask the veterinarian what to monitor and how to respond if intake or droppings change.

Everyday feeding habits

Some foods, including avocado, are unsafe for birds according to veterinary sources. Ask your avian veterinarian for a safe-food list for your bird, and check it before offering unfamiliar foods.
